Internet privacy and the security of your website are very important to us, to you, and to your website visitors. We want to let your visitors know that they are visiting a secure, authenticated website, while also protecting the security of your website from malicious activity. To improve the security and privacy of your Using Essential Oils website, we are pleased to let you know that we are upgrading your website to include added security features, at no cost to you.
It’s important that you know some basics about Internet security and how it affects your website, as well as your personal web browsing. Please stay with us, we’ve tried not to get too technical, as we explain this.
Currently, most websites on the internet use a communication protocol called HTTP ( Hypertext Transfer Protocal ). The increase in security breaches and gathering unauthorized information from website visitors, has prompted the internet community to evolve to an enhanced and more secure protocol called HTTPS. You are probably familiar with HTTPS for sensitive data security for shopping and banking online. Now it has been found that hackers can compile your general browser activity to create personal profiles that can threaten security. To better protect general browsing, the Internet industry is moving towards expanding security to “HTTPS Everywhere and Everything”. Heading the evolution is Google and Internet browsers as you can see below.
Over the past several weeks, Using Essential Oils has shifted all of our subscriber websites to HTTPS, this more secure protocol. To implement this changeover, an identity verification process and a SSL( Secure Sockets Layer ) certificate of authenticity for each domain is required. We have completed this process, purchased a special SSL certificate of authenticity which covers all Using Essential Oils domain names, and modified each site to incorporate this new level of security. Each unique website with the “usingessentialoils.com” domain is now covered by this SSL certificate of authenticity and HTTPS protocol. Domain mapped sites have special requirements. If you have a domain mapped site it is important that you click on the blue button at the bottom of this section for instructions .
You can see this change to your website in your URL address bar. Your URL changes to https://yourwebsite.usingessentialoils.com and a small image of a green padlock will also appear in the URL browser area and look like this image:You do not need to do anything different with your links or website promotion. All of this happens internally and automatically. Best of all, there is no additional charge to you for these upgrades and administration!
If you are interested in knowing more, here’s a couple of FAQ’s about HTTPS and CloudFlare:
What does HTTPS do?
An HTTPS connection guarantees three things:
- Confidentiality: The visitors conection is encrypted, obscuring URLS. Cookies, and other sensitive metadata.
- Authenticity: The visitor is talking to the “real” website and not to an impersonator
- Integrity: The data sent between the visitor and the website has not been tampered with or modified
Why do this?
Unsecure HTTP is not confidential, it lacks integrity and cannot be authenticated. Additionally, every unencrypted HTTP communication reveals information about the users behavior and the interception and tracking of unencrypted browsing has become commonplace. Over time, the entire internet environment will favor HTTPS websites.
What is CloudFlare?
CloudFlare is an online service available to web developers and website owners which provides added security and performance to websites. Here’s a clip from their website:
